Matt Damon reveals wife suffered brain aneurysm and had surgery the night of the 2024 Oscars

Matt Damon has shared the frightening truth behind why he skipped the 2024 Oscars, revealing his wife suffered from a brain aneurysm and had surgery the week before Hollywood’s night of nights.
The 56-year-old American actor opened up about his wife Luciana Barroso’s health scare on the night his film Oppenheimer won seven awards in an interview with GQ.
“We had this whole scary thing happen where my wife had a brain aneurysm,” Damon told the publication on Thursday.

Damon said his wife took him by surprise after suggesting they attend the Vanity Fair after-party to celebrate the film’s success.
“And she surprised me and got a dress, and we went out to the after-party because she remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it,” he said.
“She was like, ‘This time we’re going out,’” Damon continued. “And it was pretty f...ing heroic of her to do that and really meaningful.”

It comes after Damon reflected on another Oscars night he regretted missing nearly two decades earlier.
In 2007, Martin Scorsese won his first Best Director Oscar for The Departed, the crime drama starring Damon — but he was nowhere near Hollywood that night.
Instead, Damon was filming scenes for The Bourne Ultimatum in Miami, where he was living with Barroso and their daughter at the time.
The couple watched the ceremony from bed and did not expect that The Departed was in the running to win Best Picture as well.
“And I realised in that moment I hadn’t even considered that that could happen,” he said.
“And I turned to Lucy, and I was like, ‘S..t, we should be there!’”

Damon said he was inundated with calls from cast members and studio executives wondering why he had missed the celebration.
“I totally blew it,” he admitted.
Damon and Barroso married in a private ceremony in 2005 and have three daughters together: Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15.
Barroso also has a daughter, Alexia, 27, whom Damon helped raise, from a previous relationship.
