This year’s ARIA Awards were not only a celebration of Australian music and production but also a night of girl power, as a diverse range of women artists dominated major categories.

Pub rock band Amyl and The Sniffers — currently touring Australia with AC/DC — were the big winners, capping off a hugely successful night by taking home the top gong of Album of the Year.

The band had already scooped awards for Best Group, Best Rock Album and Best Cover Art.

Frontwoman Amy Taylor joked their slew of awards made her PM.

“As the new prime minister of Australia, I’d like to say, ‘All immigrants welcome’,” she said.

“I’d like to say ‘Land back’, the dole’s going up, and every pub gets a million dollars.

She also quipped that the success of the band’s “life-changing” debut record meant she “probably won’t have to work at IGA ever again.”

The night of nights for Australian music took place at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on Wednesday night, where the industry gathered to honour the 29 artists and producers who received awards for their incredible talent.

And when it came to the awards, it was another female artist sharing top billing with Taylor.

Electronic DJ and producer Ninajirachi — a combination of her first name Nina and her favourite Pokémon Jirachi — took home three awards, including Best Solo Artist. Breakthrough Artist and Best Independent Release.

The 26-year-old — who admitted most people might not have heard of her before the ARIAs or even this year, said writing music on her hour-long bus ride to and from high school paid off.

Also in the spotlight was British singing sensation Olivia Dean, who graced the awards with her infectious tunes.

The 26-year-old, who is touring her new album The Art of Loving around Australia in October next year, performed one of her biggest hits Man I Need while glowing in a gold-sequinned mini dress.

Another highlight of the event was the moment rock legends You Am I were inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining icons including Yothu Yindi, Kylie Minogue, John Farnham and last year’s inductee Missy Higgins.

Honourable mentions go out to Dom Dolla, who won the inaugural Global Impact Award and best Dance/Electronic release and The Kid Laroi, who won Song of the Year for the first time.

It was a good night for WA stars too, with Kevin Parker of Tame Impala awarded Best Engineer and Best Producer while Troye Sivan took home Best Australian Live Act for his Something To Give Each Other tour.

Closing off the ceremony was You Am I with a performance of Heavy Heart and Berlin Chair, proving they can still tear it up after 30 years.
