Australia — like the rest of the world — is obsessed with the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters and its catchy, pop songs going viral since its release in June.

With the movie recently announced as Netflix’s most-watched ever, the craze surrounding K-pop shows no signs of slowing down, and Aussies are among those most obsessed.

New Spotify data has revealed that, surprisingly, older millennials (35-44) are the ones driving the KPop Demon Hunters craze, pushing Australia into the global top 10 countries streaming the soundtrack and sparking a 54 per cent nationwide surge in K-pop streams in just three months.

The data showed people aged 35-44 were listening to hit songs like Golden and Soda Pop the most (35 per cent), while those aged 25- 34 were also dominating listening hours at 31 per cent.

Fans aged 18-24 made up 16 per cent of Aussies tuning in.

While Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane lead the charge as the top cities listening to the soundtrack in Australia, Perth comes in at fourth place.

Spotify’s data also revealed unexpected growth in smaller places such as Hobart, the Central Coast, and Newcastle.

The movie follows the story of Huntr/x, an all-female K-pop group (Rumi, Mira and Zoey) who double as secret guardians of the world.

The group’s music becomes a supernatural weapon to protect their fans from dark forces and square off against their villainous counterparts Saja Boys.

Spotify Korea lead editor Iltaek Hong said one of the reasons for the film’s music being so popular was that K-pop is “more than just music”.

“It’s a rich cultural experience built around sound, storytelling, performance and deep artist-fan connections. That’s exactly what KPop Demon Hunters captures, and it’s why both the film and its music have resonated so strongly with global audiences,” he said.

“This level of interaction is what makes K-pop unique - and what makes this soundtrack stand out.

“It’s not just being listened to; it’s being lived. That kind of fandom energy is something we see reflected every day on Spotify, and is a powerful example of how music and storytelling can touch lives across the globe.”
