Margot Robbie has caused outrage after pictures emerged of her in costume for her role in the new screen adaptation of Emily Bronte’s famous novel Wuthering Heights.

Photos of the 34-year-old — who is taking on the role of Catherine Earnshaw — in an extravagant wedding dress were shared online at the weekend.

In the novel, Catherine Earnshaw is a teenager, no older than 19, who dies during childbirth.

The casting of Robbie has raised eyebrows, with fans of the book pointing out that she is almost double the age of the character she is playing.

“I still don’t understand this casting. Margot looks great, but she does not look 18,” one Reddit user said.

Another said: “She is stunning, she is also definitely not an 18 year old, brown hair Catherine. This is not casting. People will just hire whomever they want to at this point.”

Others said the look of the wedding dress, veil and bouquet strayed too far from the time in which the novel is set.

“Is this a reinterpretation? That dress does not look like 18th century Britain to me 😬,” one said.

Another commented on the pictures: “The white wedding dress was first done by Queen Victoria and this looks like some Disney-a** sh*t.”

Some say the “diabolical” casting comes as no surprise, with Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, producing the movie alongside Media Rights Capital.

Aussie heartthrob Jacob Elordi has also been cast in the movie and will play Robbie’s brooding love interest, Heathcliff.
