Ryan Reynolds has become the new co-owner of a Colombian soccer team.

The 48-year-old actor and his showbiz pal Rob McElhenney are among a star-studded group of investors who have purchased La Equidad.

The Colombian club said in a statement: “Our new owners are committed to investing in key areas, including our core forces and our female team.”

Reynolds and McElhenney are joined in the investment group by actress Eva Longoria, model Kate Upton and her husband, baseball pitcher Justin Verlander.

Reynolds and McElhenney, 47, are the current co-owners of Wrexham AFC, a Welsh soccer team, and the celebrity duo have already overseen a dramatic change in Wrexham’s fortunes since they acquired the club in 2021.

Reynolds previously described his ownership of Wrexham as “the greatest experience” of his life.

The Hollywood star - who is married to actress Blake Lively - has managed to achieve back-to-back promotions with the club, and Ryan admitted that the experience had already exceeded his own expectations.

Speaking to the BBC in 2023, Reynolds shared: “This adventure has been unlike anything else.

“I love it because it’s a project that’s going to be multi-decades.

“I met a supporter the other day whose grandfather’s ashes were scattered across the pitch. I look at this place as like a church.

“In Canada, where I am from, people are obsessed with this club. It’s been pretty remarkable. We’ve sold something like 24,000 jerseys and so many of them went to North America. We can’t get them any more. I can’t get one.

“The part I find most gratifying is the support from the community outside the club. The fact Wrexham have become a tourist destination for so many folks and they are showing up here. There is something special about this town.”
