Sarah Abo welcomes baby boy Sonny after Today host’s early maternity leave due to pregnancy complications

Today host Sarah Abo has welcomed her first child, introducing baby boy Sonny to Australia after a surprise early arrival and an emotional end to her pregnancy journey.

The television presenter, who left the breakfast show earlier than planned due to pregnancy complications, shared the happy news with viewers during a FaceTime call to her Today colleagues before posting a series of heartwarming photos on Instagram.

“Hi there, you can call me Sonny,” she wrote.

“What a week with our little man.

“He came into the world a little early but that gave us a little longer to marvel at you, our beautiful boy.

“We love you so infinitely darling.

“And to the incredible doctors and midwives who made hospital home for two weeks - thank you for taking such good care of us, you are all angels and we are forever grateful.”

Sonny is Abo’s first child with her husband of more than a decade, Cyrus Moran, and the couple have spent the past week enjoying life in what the presenter described as their own “little bubble”.

Speaking to the Today team while cradling her newborn, Abo revealed Sonny is now about a week old and, despite arriving earlier than expected, is thriving.

“He’s really good. He was born just in time to watch his first Pies win against the Blues ... so that was a bit of a thrill,” she joked.

“Although dad only had eyes for his bubba. And we’ve been just in our own little bubble for the week which is such a treat.”

Like many first-time parents, Abo admitted the past week had completely changed her perspective.

“It’s like you can’t even imagine life without them. You just go, ‘Wow, now this is our world,’ and everything is so special and nothing else matters, which is wonderful,” she said.

She also apologised to family, friends and fans she hadn’t yet replied to, explaining she and Moran had been happily occupied getting to know their new arrival.

The happy update comes just weeks after Abo was forced to begin maternity leave earlier than planned. She had originally expected to finish on the Today couch in August but announced on July 15 that ongoing pregnancy complications had seen her admitted to hospital and placed on bed rest.

At the time, she reassured followers that both she and her baby were doing well.

“Thankfully I’m in the safe hands of magnificent doctors, nurses and midwives taking incredibly good care of bub and me and we are both well,” she wrote.

During her return appearance on Today, Abo also apologised she hadn’t been able to say goodbye to viewers in person before leaving the show.

“I’ve had so many messages of support from you all. Know that I tried everything. I tried to break free out of hospital to get there on the couch just to say goodbye to you one last time. But I couldn’t, and I’m so sorry about it, doctor’s orders,” she said.

“But you all know how much I love you, and you all on the couch and everyone behind-the-scenes there just incredible. You put the best show together, and I’ve missed you all so much.

“But I’ll be seeing you all soon, you’ll be able to meet the man and I can’t wait.”
