Former Olympian Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington has opened up about his relationship with TV legend David ‘Kochie’ Koch as he reflects on his first year as co-host of Sunrise.

In a tell-all interview with New Idea, the 45-year-old revealed Kochie helped him survive the first few months in his new gig on Channel 7’s top breakfast show.

“I think I spent the first six months on the couch learning the ropes, supported so much by Nat of course,” Shirvington said.

He admitted Kochie even let him in on his secret to winning over viewers, which is to just be yourself.

“Taking on board Kochie’s advice really helped,” he said.

“Now I feel like I’ve relaxed into the role.”

Despite being in the role alongside Natalie Barr for a year, Shirvington said his first day is still his most memorable because of the tragic events that unfolded.

Having to report the Hunter Valley bus crash that killed ten people on their way back from a wedding made Shirvington realise the gravity of the job.

“It was so shocking and tragic,” he recalls.

“Going on to that story on my first day made me realise the gravity of the job. Communicating heartbreaking – and heartwarming – stories on the show is a big responsibility and privilege.”

It appears Shivington has no plans of slowing down, with the Olympic sprinter saying he feels honoured to be in the position.

“What’s surprised me, a year in, is just how much I love this job. I definitely feel proud to have passed the milestone – I’m honoured every day to be in this position.”
