Revealed: Death Cap Murders

Sunday, streaming on Stan

Oh, the irony of sitting down to review this documentary while consuming free food sent to our office for RUOK day. My gratis cupcake proved harmless (I am, in fact, still OK) . . . but the chills I got while watching this excellent deep dive!

Now the court proceedings are done and dusted, the crew behind this must-see doco — no doubt the first of many taking an in-depth look at the conviction of death cap triple murderer Erin Patterson — have gone all-out to paint a fascinating portrait of the story behind the story.

They’re chatting with journalists, law enforcement and those with intimate knowledge of the town and events that unfolded. Their perspectives are illuminating, especially The Age journalists John Silvester and Marta Pascual Juanol, who were investigating from the start. They’re chatting alongside doctors, psychologists, local residents, mushroom poison experts and Erin’s former colleagues, who fill in the gaps on this truly twisted tale.

This doco series is being released in three parts — the first instalment drops Sunday, with later episodes to come soon — and is a must-see for true-crime enthusiasts, or indeed anyone with an interest in this most intriguing of cases.

All aboard! Everyone’s favourite dapper traveller is back, riding the rails across the United Kingdom in this latest series. From Epping Forest to the Lake District, Michael Portillo is uncovering “how nature and history have shaped life along the way”. There are 20 episodes to chug through, so whether you’re a train aficionado or just into slow TV presented by a guy wearing a striped blazer, you won’t want to miss it.

Talkin’ ’Bout Your Gen

This is a reboot of that series that did the rounds on Ten for years, but this time comedian Anne Edmonds is fronting the shenanigans and she’s fabulous. Team leaders Dave Hughes (gen X), Tommy Little (gen Y) and Anisa Nandaula (gen Z) are stepping up to the plate, joined each week by guest panellists fighting it out for pop culture supremacy. This is super fun — a great addition to Tuesday nights.

This ensemble drama is picking up two years on from the UBA-NBN merger, and everyone’s grappling with new-found responsibilities and a newsroom that’s been transformed — and maybe not for the better? Along with Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, a killer cast, including Billy Crudup, Karen Pittman and this season Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons, will make it worth your while.

I never really saw it before, but Jason Bateman and Jude Law really are each other’s mirror image. In this they’re playing two very different brothers: Law is Jake Friedken, the owner of an upscale restaurant, while Bateman is his waster brother, Vince. Their stories intersect when Vince returns to town owing a huge amount of money to some shady characters, dragging his bro into all the drama. This fast-paced drama hits the ground running.
