The One About Matthew Perry

When Matthew Perry died of an accidental overdose in 2023 aged just 54, the world mourned the loss of an actor and comedian who felt like a friend.

Three years on, this three-part documentary is celebrating his life, giving a peek behind the public facade to reveal the man behind the fame.

For years, the Friends actor worked as an advocate for people in active addiction, and this will provide some context as to why.

“Matthew Perry was one of the comedic geniuses of our time,” says the show’s Emmy-winning director Mary Robertson.

“Through his many films, TV, and stage performances, and his unforgettable portrayal of Chandler Bing, he made millions of us laugh, connect, and feel a little less alone.

“He also gave us so much more by bravely speaking about addiction. Yet the public only knew part of his story.

“That’s why we set out to make this series: to let the people who knew and loved Matthew reveal the person behind the public figure.”

The series is helmed by Perry’s sister Mia Perry Bowick, with many of his lifelong friends also weighing in. Sadly, his Friends co-stars declined to take part, though by all accounts, theirs is but a small part of the bigger story of Perry’s life.

This is getting lots of buzz — mark your diaries.

Wentworth

Streaming on Foxtel and Binge

With a new spin-off series in the works, now is the perfect time to check back in with Bea, Boomer and Allie, and revisit every season of this excellent Aussie prison drama. There have been no new seasons since August 2021, yet the show remains Binge’s second-most watched series of this year — impressive! Any excuse for a rewatch, right?

It Gets Worse

Thursday, streaming on Foxtel and Binge

It Gets Worse stars Leo Reich as Ethan, with Fleabag’s Andrew Scott popping up in a guest role as his therapist.

Written, created by and starring British comedian Leo Reich, this six-episode series is about three friends in their 20s living in London. They’re all a hot mess, and this hilarious Fleabag-meets-Girls series charts their floundering efforts to stay afloat in the hopes things will get better. Spoiler alert: they don’t. Adored this.

The Mob

Monday, streaming on Disney Plus

Real talk: we’ll watch anything with Parker Posey in it. She’s hosting this new reality series, which sees a bunch of celebs holed up in an Italian villa, tackling a heap of mob movie-inspired challenges to pocket cash. They will “shake down, hustle and whack” their way to $250,000, and — yes, please! Sign me up.

Nocturne

Friday, streaming on Apple TV Plus

Nocturne, starring a terrifying Stephen Graham, is coming to Apple TV Plus.

Stephen Graham has made a name playing intense, quietly menacing characters, and he’s reached his zenith in Nocturne, playing psychopathic serial killer Jurek Walter. He’s holed up in a secure unit but Liev Shrieber’s ex-detective Jonah Lynn is convinced he’s still pulling the strings on some unfolding crimes. Addictive from the get-go.
