What To Watch TV reviews: Kitchen Cabinet, Colin From Accounts, Furious and The Devil’s Mouth

Tuesday, 8.30pm, ABC

This delightful series from ABC favourite Annabel Crabb has been running for eight seasons now, with lengthy breaks in between.

It’s finally back, and this season is shaping up to be one of the best yet.

In the first episode, Crabb took a trip to The Lodge to cook pasta with the PM, Anthony Albanese. This week she’s off to rural New South Wales to catch up with Opposition Leader Angus Taylor. He’s cooking damper, apparently, which doesn’t sound too difficult to be honest, but each to their own.

If it’s as good as episode one, we’re in for a treat.

We’re the first to admit the premise of this series is naff. But there’s something so compelling about watching one of the ABC’s best political journalists tease unexpected anecdotes from some of the nation’s most notoriously scripted and guarded politicians, using food to do it.

“Frankly, politics feels like a food fight right now,” she says by way of explanation.

“Who’d run for public office? I certainly wouldn’t.

“But that’s why I’m so interested in the people who do run for office; who choose to be a part of it, rather than fleeing the scene like any sensible person would.”

As Crabb explains, in this series she is taking the time to dig a little deeper into what makes our pollies tick “in the way humans have learned about each other for millennia — by sitting down to eat together”.

Future episodes will see Teal Independent Allegra Spender, Deputy Leader of the Greens Mehreen Faruqi, MP Josh Burns and one other yet-to-be-announced politician popping on an apron. Will it be Pauline? So far it’s looking unlikely — it will be fascinating to see who ends up opening their kitchen.

This is right up there with my favourite shows of the year. Genuinely enlightening.

“After the Season two cliffhanger, it would be cruel not to show you all what happens next,” creators Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer said ahead of this third and final season. Thankfully, they deliver right off the bat, and we learn pretty quickly whether Ashley says yes to Gordon’s impromptu proposal (no, I’m not giving you a hint). This season gets off to a cracking start, hinting at a wonderfully satisfying conclusion to this first-rate Aussie comedy classic.

This hilarious quiz show, hosted by Jimmy Carr, first aired in the UK in early January. Six months on, it’s still a great watch, and anyone who’s obsessed with TV and popular culture (guilty!) will delight in playing along at home. Guest quizzers include Australia’s Sam Campbell, plus TV expert Harry Hill, the always hilarious Joanne McNally and Judi Love — they all reliably bring the lols. JUST what we needed to watch this week. Don’t miss it.

Elizabeth Meriwether, the woman behind New Girl, The Dropout and Dying For Sex is the creator of this eight-part crime thriller, which sees Emmy Rossum play a wet-behind-the-ears FBI agent on the tail of an elusive female serial killer, played by Lola Petticrew. The pair share more similarities than differences, and each are influenced by their past traumas. If you’ve peeped the propulsive trailer, you’ll have an idea of what to expect — mark your diaries.

There are ridiculous movie premises, and then there’s this one: five college friends head to Thailand and take a scenic boat trip to explore some secluded caves. But luck is not on their side, and while underground and swimming in the idyllic spot, a ferocious shark starts stalking them, attempting to pick them off one by one. Yep — this flick is exactly what you think it is. So if you love a jump-scare and watching buff 20-somethings get mauled by sharks, this is for you!
