Popular fast food chain Guzman y Gomez has brought back a loved menu item amid a surge in demand from “devastated” customers.

The Mexican chain on Monday confirmed the rumours its pulled shiitake mushroom protein filling had returned to stores.

The vegetarian option was removed from menus in December, sparking outrage among many customers — hundreds of whom launched a petition calling for its return.

“Bring back the mushroom filling. It is the only thing I order, and I order every week,” one person said.

“I can’t believe the mushroom filling is gone. It was so good,” another said.

Another customer added: “I don’t know who decided to take shredded mushrooms off the menu but I hope your pillow is warm on both sides!”

The chain originally launched the filling in 2021 as an alternative option for customers who eat a plant-based diet but, despite it becoming a fast favourite, it was later withdrawn from the menu — until now.

“The obsession GYG guests have with mushrooms is real,” founder and co-CEO Steven Marks said.

“I’ve never had so much feedback about a menu item and, as always, we listened and it’s back and better than ever.”
