Olympic swimming champion Libby Trickett has splashed $20 million on a lavish waterfront mansion in Brisbane.

The seven-time Olympic medallist, 40, and her husband, Luke, a former stockbroker and entrepreneur, emerged as the cashed-up owners of the recently settled five-bedroom, six-bathroom residence in Hawthorne.

The property was sold in December with Sarah Hackett from Place New Farm.

Ms Hackett described the sale as "a huge highlight in my career" in a post to Instagram earlier this year.

"I'm proud to share that this truly magnificent landmark home at 98 Virginia Avenue, Hawthorne, has now sold and settled," she wrote.

The $20 million result is one of the highest prices for a house sold in Brisbane.

Colleen and Don Gardiner, the founders of the pharmacy chain, Don Gardiner Chemists, built the house.

The Gardiners bought the property in 1991 for $920,000, demolishing the existing Queenslander to rebuild their lavish family home.

Boasting expansive river and city views, the three-storey mansion occupies a 2175-square-metre waterfront block.

Luke Trickett, a former Australian national swimmer, founded the invoiced payments start-up company, Marmalade, alongside two Afterpay executives in 2019.

The Trickett family welcomed their fifth child, Archie, in April, joining their brood, including Poppy, Edwina, Bronte, and Alfred.

According to Cotality, the median house price in Hawthorne is $2.35 million.
