The most common painting mistake, according to the Three Birds Renovations team
Including the wall you're probably forgetting to paint.

There's nothing like the Easter break to get homeowners thinking about all of those DIY projects they've been putting off.
According to data from Roy Morgan, 6.2 million Australians planned a DIY project over the Easter holidays last year, with painting jobs at the top of the list. And if there's one group of people who know how to tackle a DIY or painting project around the home it's the Three Birds Renovations team.
Known for transforming tired houses into light-filled spaces, the team understands the power of paint when updating a space. For a long time, the team's projects had a signature neutral colour palette. However, there's now been a shift towards what they call the "new neutrals".

"There's a wave of new neutrals that are becoming fast favourites amongst the Three Birds Renovations team. Greens, like Dulux Still, have long been a standout shade, offering a nod to nature with a calming effect that works effortlessly with natural light," the team told view.com.au.
"Other rising favourites include warm yellows, earthy blues, and clay-based hues ... These colours are sophisticated and add personality without overwhelming a space."

The team reiterated that it's now less about "crisp, gallery-style minimalism" with more of a focus on creating spaces that feel "welcoming, comfortable and made for real life."
Where to start?
If you're tired of your current colour palette and want to try something new, the team advised looking towards your smaller rooms.
"If you're feeling a little nervous, start small," the Three Bids team said. "Powder rooms and laundries are brilliant places to be brave and build confidence with colour.
"These private spaces allow you the grace to have fun and experiment before you make the leap to the rest of the home."
To colour-drench or not to colour-drench?
Colour-drenching has been one of the biggest painting trends for the last few years and according to the Three Birds team, it's a great way to personalise a space. However, there is one important wall you can't forget.

"When you're considering bringing colour into a space, don't forget to involve the ceiling; painting it in a colour can instantly make a space feel cosy and intentional," the team said.
"Painting the walls, ceilings, doors and trims in the same shade is a great way to add a unique bit of personality to a space."
Top three paint tips
When it came to the team's tips for homeowners planning painting projects over the break, the team had three pieces of advice. The first: "play around with shades".
"Don't be afraid of using multiple whites, or different strengths of the same colour, within the same home. When done right, they work together beautifully to create a tonal look."

Next up was some precautionary advice: "Test, test, and test again".
"The time of day and positioning of a room can make the same colour look totally different. We like to use a Sample Pot to observe the colour on the walls before making a decision," the team said.
"If that seems too daunting, you can also order some A4 Colour Stickers to put up."
The third piece of advice was to "keep undertones in mind".
"When it comes to pairing neutrals with colours, undertones are everything," the team said. "A tiny shift from warmer or cooler tones can completely change how a space feels - especially once natural light gets involved."
Avoid this mistake
While the team had many tips, they also had thoughts on the common mistakes people make. The most common one? Not considering how colours flow throughout a home.

"Your home experience matters, and flow plays a large part in colour choice, especially in open plan homes," the team said. "Colours should move effortlessly from room to room to create a sense of cohesion, rather than feeling disconnected across different spaces."
So how do you avoid this problem?
"Use your vision board! We always come back to our vision board for a specific project when planning our colours," the team advised.
"Once the overall colour story is clear, you're able to create that sense of cohesion throughout the home."
