But away from the stage, have the band members been making moves in the property world? We'll find out.

In 2024, it was reported that drummer Lars Ulrich's childhood home was on the market for about $6.85 million US.

Ulrich lived in the house, located on a small street of Hellerup, the most fashionable part of the municipality of Gentofte, in eastern Denmark, with his parents Torben and Lene for 17 years until he moved to Los Angeles and launched Metallica. We'll suggest that the move worked out okay for him.

In 2020, Ulrich's San Francisco mansion sold for $10.3 million.

The hilltop Tiburon property had been listed the previous year for $12 million.

The house has 25 rooms, including seven bedrooms, six full baths - one with a fish aquarium over the tub - and three half-baths. There are five fireplaces, a library, a recording studio and an underground basketball court.

Records listed Ulrich as a past owner of the property, which was under a trust at the time it was sold.

After decades of life in San Francisco's Bay Area, frontman James Hetfield escaped to Vail, Colorado several years ago.

The home features seven bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and 11,509 square feet.

It's located right at the base of the renowned Vail ski resort, with features to allow you to ski right in and out of the home.

The home was actually voted Mountain Living's 2010 Home of the Year, prior to the Hetfields purchasing it.

In 2021, Hetfield sold 20 acres of vacant land in Arizona for $1.2 million.

'Papa Het' is believed to still own property and land in the Bay Area.

In 2017, lead guitarist Kirk Hammett listed one of his two adjacent houses in San Francisco's Sea Cliff neighbourhood.

A year later, he put the second one on the market.

One of the homes has eye-catching views of China Beach to the Pacific Ocean and the Marin Headlands.

It boasts four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a formal living room, dining room, family room, large kitchen with breakfast nook, a grand spiral staircase and cliff-side gardens.

One of the homes was sold for $US12.8 million in 2018, while the other reportedly fetched $11.7 million in 2019.

The guitarist is believed to own other homes in California and Hawaii, providing a welcome escape from the world of heavy metal.

Bassist Robert Trujillo owns a property in Topanga, California, which he reportedly purchased for about $3 million.

It's a 2092 square foot home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Hit the lights

In 2024, it was reported that a house located on the site where Metallica recorded their debut album was on the market for $3.4 million.

Located in Rochester, New York, the family home occupies the same space where the Bay Area band crafted Kill 'Em All in 1983 at Music America Studios.

The current owner bought the property in 2008, deciding to demolish the studio and build a 10,175-square-foot home.

The house features two bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a wet bar, a wine room, and a private art gallery.

The house Jack built

Former bassist Jason Newsted was relentlessly hazed by band-mates after joining Metallica, his instrument was barely audible on 1988's ...And Justice for All, and he enjoyed just three songwriting credits across a 15-year career in the group.

However, it was still a lucrative career being in the world's biggest metal act, and he's done rather well in the property world.

In 2020, it was reported that Newsted had bought a new home in Skaneateles, New York for $6.1 million.

The waterfront property, located on the shores of Skaneateles Lake, sits on three acres.

The two-storey main house has six bedrooms and five bathrooms.

This was the second major real estate move for Newsted in less than a year. He sold his Northern California home in December 2019 for $2.3 million.

In 2021, Newsted sold his ranch property, the Rockin' JN Ranch in Sula, Montana, after listing it for $4.95 million US.

With a living area of 5812 square feet, the property's primary residence contains three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. It also has a furnished basement with a fireplace.

The 540-acre property also features a guest house.

A key member of Metallica during the band's formative days, Dave Mustaine has since forged a successful career fronting fellow metal act Megadeth.

In 2019, after three-and-a-half years and multiple drops in the asking price, Mustaine sold his 10-acre estate in California.

The sale price was $2 million, but he had originally listed it in 2015 for $5.375 million. To borrow a line from his former band - sad, but true.

The listing at the time described it as a "once in a lifetime opportunity to own one of the premier estate properties in Southern California".

The land also had an on-site vineyard.

Also, in 2019, Mustaine listed his 10.9-acre property in Tennessee for $2.498 million. However, it was withdrawn from the market in April 2020.

In 2023, Mustaine told the crowd at a Megadeth show that, "I have something very special I need to tell you guys... A couple of weeks ago I just bought a house in Italy".

"I am so excited to be able to call Italy a new place for us to live," he said.
