The Lott reveals what Australians would really do after winning a multi-million dollar lottery jackpot
The Lott has uncovered how Australians would spend their time, money and working lives if they suddenly became multi-millionaires.
We’ve all played the game and imagined “what if”.
The numbers come up. You’re suddenly a multi-millionaire. Do you quit on the spot? Call your boss? Book a one-way ticket around the world?
As it turns out, surprisingly, most Australians wouldn’t be racing to hand in their resignation at all.

By continuing you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy.New research from The Lott has found that more than half of Australians (55 per cent) would keep working even after banking a life-changing jackpot, although many admit they’d finally do it on their own terms.
Rather than walking away from the 9-to-5, almost one in four (24 per cent) would cut back their hours, while others would use the windfall to launch a business (9 per cent) or completely reinvent themselves with a new career (5 per cent).
And before making any life-changing decisions, one in four Australians confessed they’d simply take some personal leave to let the reality sink in.
Once the dust settled, the bucket-list careers started to emerge.
Some dream of swapping the office for Antarctica. Others would spend their days testing theme park rides, painting full-time, travelling Australia with a video blog or finally ticking off a master’s degree or PhD.
For plenty of Aussies, a jackpot isn’t about never working again. It’s about finally getting to do the work they’ve always wanted.
Others said they’d spend their newfound freedom giving back, volunteering at the local men’s shed or helping farmers who couldn’t afford an extra pair of hands.

Even side hustles would survive the millions.
Almost half (43 per cent) said they’d keep selling candles, breeding rare plants, scoring local football or dogsitting, proving that for many Australians, passion projects aren’t really about the money.
The Lott spokesperson, Eliza Wregg, said the findings turned the classic “I’d quit tomorrow” fantasy on its head.
“We often hear people say they’d quit work on the spot after a major lottery win, but the reality looks a little different,” she said.
“Instead of ditching work altogether, there was a real theme of Aussies reimagining work on their own terms.”
Perhaps the biggest surprise isn’t that Australians dream about winning Lotto... it’s that so many are already dreaming about what they’d rather be doing on Monday morning.
