Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been quick to pour doubt on a report that she’s going to end her successful reign at Chelsea at the end of the season by joining ambitious US expansion club Denver Summit.

Network 10 had reported that the 32-year-old Kerr has signed with the Colorado-based club in the NWSL after six glittering seasons with Chelsea where she won the Women’s Super League title five times as well as three FA Cups.

But Kerr was quick to post on Snapchat on Thursday: “Don’t believe everything you read in the media man, they know a decision before me”.

Kerr’s future has been up in the air at Chelsea as she’ll be out of contract at the end of the season, and there’s been widespread speculation that this could be her final year at the club where she has enjoyed one of the greatest careers in the WSL of any player.

Following a long absence after an ACL injury, she’s made her way back to full fitness slowly this season, featuring many cameos off the bench but, more recently, some glimpses of her vintage best.

On Wednesday night, Chelsea’s exit from the Champions League in the quarter-finals at the hands of local rivals Arsenal had the feel that it might have been Kerr’s last chance at winning women’s soccer’s biggest club prize.

A move to the US would be a return for the striker who really announced herself as an international force in stints with NWSL clubs Western New York Flash, Sky Blue FC and Chicago Red Stars before her move to England.

Kerr has an American partner, former US international Kristie Mewis, and her signing would be a coup for expansion club Denver Summit, who have US ski star Mikaela Shiffrin and NFL great Peyton Manning among their owners.

Their potential was outlined spectacularly at Mile High Stadium on Saturday when their 0-0 draw against Washington Spirit was watched by 63,004 fans, some 20,000 more than the previous NWSL attendance record.
