Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was reportedly the target of an alleged abduction and violence plot, with the AFP charging a man from Sydney after the Bondi Beach terror attack.

The man, a 27-year-old from Beacon Hill, was charged on Sunday, December 21, after the AFP National Security Investigations (NSI) looked into an online threat.

“It will be alleged the man made an online post calling for the kidnapping of the federal parliamentarian,” an AFP spokesperson said.

The man fronted court in Manly on Monday over charges he used social media to threaten a politician.

Reports now claim that the federal politician allegedly targeted was Mr Albanese.

The Prime Minister, who is currently in Canberra, has not yet commented on the specific alleged abduction and violence plot. However, speaking from Parliament House on Wednesday, Mr Albanese said there is “no place for the rise in violence” that continues to occur in Australia.

“We need to be able to have civil political discourse in this country,” Mr Albanese said.

“We need to be able to disagree as well as agree respectfully.

“There is no place for the rise in violence (which) has occurred.

“There have been a number of charges laid over recent times, including the (alleged kidnapping).

“The fact that security has had to be increased is of concern.”

Mr Albanese welcomed passionate political engagement, but said it needs to be respectful.

“I’m all for political engagement. I encourage people to engage, particularly young people to engage in political discourse because in a democracy, participation is an essential component,” Mr Albanese said.

“But it does need to be respectful because otherwise you have issues that make it difficult to have that open debate which occurs.”
