The country’s newest electorate of Bullwinkel will be one of the most closely watched in the Western Australia as three main candidates vie for one seat.

The electorate was created in the 2024 redistribution and spans from Perth’s eastern hills out to the farming country of York and Northam.

The seat has a notional margin of 3.3 in Labor’s favour as it takes areas from six electorates which have shifted to make way.

Labor has named nurse Trish Cook as their challenger and the party will be keen to win the seat and further entrench its new-found dominance on Western Australia.

Despite the seat being notionally Labor’s, a front runner in the race has been the Liberal’s candidate Matt Moran, a former army public affairs officer and journalist.

The race is not expected to be a straight forward battle between the the Liberal and Labor party, with the Nationals fielding former State Opposition leader Mia Davies as their candidate.

While Ms Davies is only seen as an outside chance of winning the seat, she has strong name recognition in the more regional areas of the seat.

Given the seat’s unique mix of outer suburban and regional areas, the issues for voters have been varied.

While questions over the live sheep export ban have at points plagued Ms Cook’s campaign, she has insisted voters’ main concern is the cost of living and access to healthcare.

There has also been a fair share of awkward moments for the Coalition candidates, with Mr Moran and Ms Davies often sharing press conferences for Coalition announcements despite campaigning against each other.

Ms Davies also broke party ranks over her support for Labor’s resources production tax credits policy, something opposed by the Coalition.

The unexpected defiance has created a point of difference between her and Mr Moran.
