Deakin electorate guide: Federal election 2025 candidates, results and margin

As the most marginal seat in the country Deakin is one of the most sought after electorates in this year’s election.
The seat in Melbourne’s east is held by shadow housing minister Michael Sukkar on a wafer-thin margin of 0.02 per cent.
In 2022, the electorate was decided on just 375 votes.

The seat has historically been a bellwether seat with 2022 being the first time the winning candidate’s party did not win the Federal election since 1993.
Mr Sukkar won the electorate in 2022 with just a 0.2 per cent margin before a redistribution cut the margin by 90 per cent.
Deakin loses its suburbs in the south east and gains more in its north west, pushing the seat slightly in Labor’s favour.
Mr Sukkar’s win was his fourth victory in the electorate which he has held since 2013.
Before the Coalition lost government he held the portfolios of Minister for Housing and Minister for Homelesness, Social and Community Housing.
He currently holds the shadow portfolios of social services, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, housing and for homelessness.
Lawyer and former teacher Matt Gregg will be contesting the seat for Labor. It will be his second run at the seat after his 2022 challenge pulled up just short.
