With a margin of just 1.7 per cent, the Country Liberal party are hoping they can flip the seat of Lingiari their way for the first time in its history this election.

Lingiari, held by Labor’s Marion Scrymgour is a huge electorate which covers everywhere in the Northern Territory outside of Darwin including Alice Springs, Katherine and the Tiwi Islands. It also includes the Cocos Islands and Christmas Island.

It has had a minor redistribution, giving away some of Darwin’s south eastern suburbs to the seat of Solomon.

Despite its size, Lingiari has the second fewest enrolled voters out of electorates across the nation and has a relatively poor voting rate.

The seat also has a unique voting pattern given its predominantly rural population and large numbers of remote Indigenous communities.

    2025 Federal Election

In 2022 just 21.6 per cent of votes were cast on polling day compared to 47.5 per cent at pre poll and 24 per cent mobile votes.

The mobile votes, which include Indigenous communities, favoured Labor by nearly 20 points, while the other methods all slightly favoured the Country Liberal party.

The seat has never been lost by Labor since it was formed in 2001 thanks largely to the the long-standing and inaugural member of Lingiari, Warren Snowdon who ultimately retired before the 2022.

Mr Snowdon was succeeded by Ms Scrymgour, a former State politician and cabinet member who won the seat with a slim 1.7 per cent margin.

The Country Liberal party has picked Australian Federal Police officer Lisa Siebert as their challenger for the seat.

The party will be hoping their choice of candidate and tough-on-crime messaging will resonate with voters in an area which has often been the centre of media and political focus for its issues with youth crime.

It was a message which was successful for their State counterparts as the Country Liberal Party were able to gain ten seats in a 25 seat state legislature to be elected with a commanding majority.
