All eyes are on the very marginal Adelaide seat of Sturt with a fine margin of just 0.5 per cent separating the incumbent Liberal and Labor challenger.

While seven of South Australia’s 10 electorates are held on margins of more than 10 per cent, few electorates across the nation are as tight as Sturt.

Despite eastern-Adelaide seat being held by the Labor party for just four years of its 76-year history there is a serious chance the seat could flip red this election.

It is currently held by former political staffer James Stevens who succeeded long-term MP and former-Minister Chris Pyne, who he also worked for.

While the 2019 election saw a slight uptick in the Liberal’s result they lost significant ground in 2022, suffering a 6.4 per cent swing against James Stevens.

    2025 Federal Election

In 2025, Labor have preselected Claire Clutterhamto challenge for the seat. If successful, the lawyer and local councillor could become the first woman to hold the seat.

Both parties know are well aware the seat could flip, especially given the popularity of Labor Premier Peter Malinauskas who stormed to victory in the 2022 State election.

A recent South Australian poll by Demos found the State government holds a 59 to 41 per cent two-party-preferred lead, three per cent higher than the 2022 State election result.

The same poll found support for Federal Labor on a two-party-preferred basis had reduced by one per cent in the State compared to the 2022 Federal election to lead the Coalition 53 per cent to 47 per cent.

Primary support for both Labor and the Liberals had held relatively steady, only falling by less than a percentage point each.
