Speculation is reaching fever pitch that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will visit the Governor-General on Friday morning to call the election.

Public service and political staffer sources are preparing for the election to be called.

Mr Albanese has been asked the question of when the date will be in a blitz of radio interviews this morning — prompting him to tell one station he will call it just to stop the questions.

Separately, he told Triple M that he would be calling it “imminently”.

“I can confirm that I’m not calling it today but I will call it soon,” Mr Albanese said.

“I think that Australians want to get on with it. Certainly my caucus colleagues do.”

He has previously confirmed the election would be in May.

A visit to Yarralumla could be used to trigger either a traditional five-week campaign to May 3 or a slightly longer one with a May 10 polling day.

The move would cut the oxygen from any further announcements Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was planning to unveil in his Budget reply speech tonight.

The Coalition stole the Government’s tax cuts thunder overnight by announcing it plans to halve fuel excise for a year, offering the average motorist a saving of almost $14 a week.

It has also announced it will repeal the $5-a-week tax cut legislation that was rushed through Parliament on Wednesday.
