The candidates have traded insults as election day looms.

The US has a proud history of honouring its leaders and those who have sacrificed for their nation in statue form — but there’s never been anything quite like this.

Appearing in Washington’s National Mall on Thursday amid much consternation stands a monument to the Jan 6 rioters who violently stormed the Capitol and tried to seize power in 2021.

It features a giant bronze-coloured emoji-style ‘poop’ on top of then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s desk in a satirical reference to reports that emerged on the day that that’s exactly what rioters had done during the violence.

“This memorial honours the brave men and women who broke into the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, to loot, urinate and defecate throughout those hallowed halls in order to overturn an election,” a plaque accompanying the statue reads.

“President Trump celebrates these heroes of January 6th as ‘unbelievable patriots’ and ‘warriors.’ This monument stands as a testament to their daring sacrifice and lasting legacy.”

It is reportedly the work of an outfit called Civic Crafting and the National Parks Service approved its prominent placement.

Some onlookers laughed out loud as they came upon the statue, others wrinkled their noses. Almost all of them took photos, according to The Washington Post.

“Bwhahaha! A fitting monument to the insurrectionists,” one person wrote on X.

But while some appreciated the pointed humour and raced to get selfies, not everyone is laughing.

“This goes beyond tasteless and borders on obscene. I can’t believe anyone would approve a permit like this.” one person wrote on X.
