A man has been charged after allegedly entering the US Today show’s studio in New York on Thursday and yelling racial slurs at co-host Craig Melvin.

Andrew Truelove, 41, was charged with hate crime (burglary), hate crime (menacing), and hate crime (criminal trespass and harassment), the NYPD said, as reported by People.

Authorities say Mr Truelove entered the NBC studio in Rockerfeller Plaza and confronted Melvin, where he allegedly yelled the slurs, with law enforcement also revealing to the publication he had allegedly asked for co-host Al Roker after breaching studio security.

The co-presenter also shared a statement on behalf of the network.

“There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorised area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured,” the statement read.

“TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they I investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously.

Other regulars on the morning program include Savannah Guthrie, Jenna Bush Hager, Carson Daly, Sheinelle Jones, Dylan Dreyer, Willie Geist, Laura Jarrett, and Peter Alexander.

In June 2026, Mr Truelove had pleaded guilty to felony criminal mischief relating to the damage of multiple vehicles.

He was sentenced to six months jail, five years of probation and ordered to pay US$375 ($537), however it remains unclear how much of that sentence he served.

Melvin’s co-host Guthrie has also been working with police on a matter close to home — the disappearance of her mother Nancy in January.

The 84-year-old’s believed abduction from her home in Arizona has sparked months of searching, with local police and the FBI leading the investigation.

The case remains ongoing.
