Brendan Fevola steps in to support Luke and Sassy Scott as homophobic incident rocks The Amazing Race

AFL great Brendan Fevola has been lauded the hero in an ugly incident of homophobia that rocked a reality TV show.
The former Carlton and Brisbane goalkicker is currently appearing on The Amazing Race Australia alongside his daughter Leni, competing against several celebrities, including TikTokers Luke and Sassy Scott, and SAS Australia host Ant Middleton.
Middleton and his brother Dan were disqualified in the early stages of the race for what Channel 10 described as “a breach of the code of conduct”.

Amidst the alleged incident, it was Fevola who stepped in to put an end to it, according to Sassy Scott.
Speaking on his morning radio show alongside the brothers, the AFL champion said he was rattled by it, and could only imagine how the Luke and Sassy Scott felt.
“I know this is a pretty tough topic, and obviously some stuff went on earlier in the show. We’ve spoken about it, I know you guys can’t really speak about it too much more than what happened, but I was there,” Fevola told FoxFM.
“I witnessed what one particular contestant did to you boys, and said it to me, and also said it to you previously, and a few other things along the lines.
“But I just want to say to you boys, I’m sorry for what happened to you.

“Because I haven’t really been privy to it at all, and you guys, getting the slurs that you did, the homophobic slurs that were thrown your way throughout the day, it’s just not on.
“I confronted the person, and whatever happened, happened after that.
“And then I literally went back to my room — people don’t know (this) — I went back to my room, and I was rattled. I don’t get rattled; it’s very hard (to rattle me). Like, I’ve been in some real trouble, and I’m like, ‘Oh well, it’ll be alright’.”
Fevola said he threatened to leave the show if the offender wasn’t removed.
“I was shaking, and Leni was like, ‘What’s wrong, Dad?’ And I said, ‘This is what’s happened, we are leaving the show tomorrow — if that person is still on the show, we’re done’. And she was like, ‘Yep, Dad, we’re done’. So, we said the same thing to the producers,” he said.
“I walked into their room — because you’re not allowed to go into anyone else’s room — and I went to their room just to check on them because I was shaken.
“For me to be shaken and for you guys to experience what you did — I was worried about you.
“So I went in, I walk in, there’s 400 people in there. All the production, the producers, the security.
“I think these were the words you said: ‘This happens to me every day. People say this stuff every day’. And for guys to go through that is just crap.
“I apologise that you had to go through that, and whatever will come out afterwards will come out.
“But I’m glad that I met you guys and become really good mates with you, because you boys are just beautiful, you did nothing wrong. You go on a show like that to have fun, you don’t go on there to expect to get berated.
“The things that went on with the boys, it’s just not on, and I hated it.
“It made the experience for that couple of days really, really tough. But we all pushed on, which was good.”

Sassy Scott, whose real name is Scott O’Halloran, thanked Fevola for de-escalating the situation.
“I think the biggest thing to say here is that we have to thank you so much, because without you, we have no idea where that could have gone — the multiple incidents, which we’ve spoken about. Over six times, it kept happening,” he said to Fevola.
“You did what so many people just don’t do today, which is stand up for what they know is wrong or stand up for what they know is right.
“Luke and I are very, very grateful for you being there because there weren’t many people around. You saved the day and we appreciate you.
“You are a huge important person in our life now because you showed up when so many people choose to turn a blind eye to those types of situations. We’re very grateful for you.”
Speaking to Yahoo in the aftermath, Ant Middleton said he had no involvement in the incident.
“I wasn’t present when a situation unfolded with my brother. The only thing the production could tell me is that our team couldn’t continue due to a situation that unfolded with my brother,” he said.
“Strange situation, but one that’s completely out of my control and had nothing to do with me.”
