Brownlow medallist Patrick Cripps melts hearts with playful tribute to ‘beautiful’ wife, Monique

Carlton champion Patrick Cripps was reflective and emotional — but still had time for a gag — after winning his second Brownlow Medal with a record number of votes on Monday night.

Cripps was dubbed “a humble champion” by Seven host Hamish McLachlan, and showed his class when he took to the podium to make his speech.

Naturally, the 29-year-old thanked his teammates and coaches, but it was his playful nod to his wife that melted hearts.

“Lastly, to my wife Mon,” he said

“You are looking beautiful tonight. I think it’s the best kit you ever had so far, so well done.”

As the crowd erupted with laughter, he quickly added: “Even though she threw me under the bus at the red carpet (and) told everyone I watch my (own) highlights.”

Cripps then continued and was full of love and sincerity.

“What you do for our family ... you are a special person,” he said.

“I appreciate what you do. Since you’ve been a mum, you have inspired me and I know Koda (his recently born daughter) is lucky to have you as a mum.”

Monique looked on with pride as Cripps spoke.

Later, Monique spoke about her husband, and was asked what the footballer was like at home.

“He’s a little lazy,” she said with a laugh.

“No, no, no, he’s pretty good. I think he’s so put together and so motivated at the club, he comes home and can relax and whatnot.

“He’s always in routine ... Especially with our daughter, with you know ... he takes hold of everything.

“He’s actually an amazing dad. Look, it’s been hard through footy season because we understand they need their sleep to optimise their performance. I have taken ... I have taken that on. But, nah, he’s fine.

“He’s loving. He’s a softy. Yeah. I think he ... he never really pictured having a daughter, as such. But I don’t think he can imagine having a boy now. Yeah. So, no, it’s been amazing. He’s a great dad.”

Earlier, Cripps had thanked his family who are from WA.

“As you know family is a big part of my life, to mum, dad and my two brothers, I know you guys will be ready to have a big one,” he said.

“But I appreciate what you guys do for me. Yeah, without you guys, I don’t know I could do what I do.

“It’s obviously I always love when you guys are over and spend time together. Living away has (it’s challenges) ... It’s great to play in Melbourne but also has its challenges and (your support) is special.”

Cripps won his second Brownlow with a record 45 votes.

After winning the game’s most prestigious individual honour two years ago, he is now the first player to win two Brownlows as a Carlton player.

Former Carlton greats Chris Judd and Greg Williams also won two Brownlows, but only won one while representing the Blues.
