The Channel 7 footy expert says the Magpies are in 'a world of hurt'.

Kane Cornes says Collingwood should trade superstar midfielder Jordan De Goey to address their glaring lack of talented youth coming through.

The Magpies had a good season in 2025, bouncing back into the top four after missing finals last season, only to run into eventual premiers Brisbane in a disappointng preliminary final.

But Cornes is convinced the club has a dearth of young talent that puts them on the edge of a slide down the AFL ladder.

For that reason, he thinks the Pies should explore a trade for De Goey, who had interest from St Kilda in 2022.

“They came for him three years ago in a massive way,” Sam Edmund said on The Agenda Setters.

“And they were relatively close; he entertained then, heard their offers, (but) ended up staying at Collingwood, he’s got two years to run (on his contract).

“The last thing Collingwood need is to lose a midfielder, but could they (St Kilda) circle back for Jordan De Goey?”

Cornes said Collingwood would have more to gain from entertaining it than St Kilda.

“I think Collingwood should explore this,” he said.

“This is a guy who’s going to be 30 by Round 1, he’s played 24 games in the past two years, he’s had (over) 20 disposals twice this year for a midfield-forward, he’s well past his best, there are serious issues with his body.

“If they could get something significant, Collingwood, who have no access to the draft and haven’t been to the draft significantly in the past seven years, I would absolutely put his name up and shop him around to the highest bidder.

“If that’s St Kilda and they want to give you something crazy like they did for (Sam) Flanders, Collingwood would be silly not to look at that.”

The Magpies are chasing out-of-favour Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver, who is only a year younger than De Goey and would come with a lucrative contract, albeit paid partly by the Demons.

Bringing Oliver in would suggest the Pies are still trying to keep themselves in the premiership window, but trading Ge Goey would do the opposite.

“At least he plays, at least Oliver plays,” Cornes responded.

“I think De Goey’s body is a real issue and I think that you’d get a bigger price for Jordan De Goey, and then you can take that pick, go to the draft, and start to get some young talent in.

“I mean, Ed Allan won their best player, like, please. They’re in a world of hurt with a lack of young players coming through and, if De Goey is the vehicle to get that and replenish your list somewhat, I would absolutely be looking at that.”

Prominent player manager Liam Pickering was at odds with Cornes in his view.

“I wouldn’t. He’s a star player, he’s a match-winner, he’s a great finals player,” Pickering said.

“Yes, he had some injuries this year, but I wouldn’t be shopping Jordan De Goey at any stage.

“Your saying St Kilda we’re talking about — what have they got to give? They got rid of their pick No.7.

”I think they still think they’re in the premiership window. I know you don’t, but I think they do. And if you’re going to let one of your star players go, they’re not going to be in that premiership window very long.”
