Comedian Dave Hughes was rushed to intensive care after breaking five ribs and puncturing a lung during a charity footy legends match at Marvel Stadium. The incident occurred when Hughes was tackled during the game, which raised almost a million doll

Dave Hughes has jokingly declared he is “loving the attention” but admits he is still “real tender” after suffering five broken ribs and a punctured lung in the Legends Game last Thursday night.

The comedian finished the charity match in pain following several heavy hits, and after initially returning home he headed to hospital in the early hours of Friday morning and spent time in intensive care.

Hughes was discharged on Sunday but is still battling, saying he still needs help putting his socks on.

“Still having struggles talking, I just had an endone,” he told FOX FM on Monday morning.

“There’s only so much — I can’t go too deep into my lungs, there’s still a hole there.

“Would I swap? No. I don’t know. I am loving the attention, you know that. You know what I’m like.

“(The pain) just hits you, I was in an Uber yesterday just groaning in the back and the guy had no idea what was going on. ‘You’re taking the corners too fast, man, you’ve got to go slow round these corners.’

Hughes’s injuries became the headline act out of the Legends Game, alongside former AFL player turned footy podcaster Dan Gorringe.

He said he was hurt in “a fair clash” with West Coast champion Andrew Embley but he was also felled while in pain by Gorringe and ex-Lions midfielder Mitch Robinson.

He has now pointed the finger at Gorringe in particular, arguing he broke an unwritten rule of the Legends Game.

“Of all the acts that happened — he just couldn’t give me a heads-up he was going to do it?” Hughes said.

“Fev (Brendan Fevola) knows what it’s like, it’s a bit of WWE where you give a heads-up that you’re going to smash someone. But he did not.

“I had no idea that he was going to smash me in the ruck there. If I had’ve known that I would’ve run the other way!”

Asked with tongue firmly in cheek if he would launch legal action against Gorringe, Hughes said: “I don’t want to sue, I don’t want to get lawyers involved.”

Gorringe apologised in one of his trademark reaction videos.

“Dave, first of all, I hope you’re resting up, I really do,” he said.

“If I contributed to your multiple broken ribs and punctured lung in our little head-to-head ... then my hand’s up. I apologise and I hope you’re having a speedy recovery. That’s on me.”

Embley also apologised on Friday.

“I just want to say that I am so sorry for my little thump on you last night that has obviously caused so much damage,” he said on Triple M.

“You look so sore right now. How brave were you, big fella, to continue with the game. I’m thinking of you.

“Rest up and, again mate, I’m so sorry that I’ve caused you to be having this very tough morning this morning. Take care and I’ll send some flowers your way shortly.”

Meanwhile, Hughes said he had already cancelled four gigs but pushed through the pain to speak for 10 minutes at a charity event on Sunday.

“You know I hate cancelling gigs,” he said.

“I’m meant to be on a plane tomorrow. That’s probably not a good idea, is it?”
