He returned to play with strapping on his arm, only to make things worse with a brave one-handed tackle on Jaspa Fletcher in the third quarter.

Cameron landed directly on his injured arm and was in instant agony.

The 32-year-old again left the field for treatment and returned — even backed in to finish the game over ruckman Rhys Stanley, who was substituted out in the second half.

Cameron was in clear pain one more time when tackled attempting to kick a goal late in the game.

After the game he had little feeling in his arm and used his guernsey as a makeshift sling, with shattered family members — and a beer in his good hand — consoling him in the rooms.

Dangerfield later revealed the sickening extent of what Cameron played through.

“It’s one of those things, it’s a grand final so you do whatever you can. But I heard a pretty big snap during the game,” he told Channel 7.

In a separate interview, the skipper added: “He looks pretty sore. He’s obviously a pretty important player for us and it was a big hit. Not sure where it was at but he was pretty sore.”

“Obviously brave but there’ll be other players that were a little bit sore.

Geelong coach Chris Scott, hoping it did not “sound like sour grapes”, said he will be “rapt to see the back of the sub rule” after difficult discussions while Cameron was being assessed during the game.

“That was the seriousness of the injury. It makes planning difficult. We were just waiting and waiting and waiting, we couldn’t make that sub while waiting for clarity there,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“In the heat of the moment ... is it a crack, is it a decent break? Can he play, can’t he? It took a long time to work out but he was heavily limited from late in the second quarter.

“I don’t think you have any choice but to submit yourself to the medical team and give them the space to do what they need to do.”

Cameron was the only serious injury concern for the Cats.

Dangerfield was blunt when asked if he went into the grand final with any complaints.

“It’s a ruthless game. There’s no excuses from me or anyone. We just couldn’t quite get it done,” he said.

Brisbane lost Brandon Starcevich to concussion in the second half, sparking concerns his career could be over.

The 26-year-old missed time earlier in the season following a concussion in Round 1.

He has been weighing up a lucrative long-term offer from West Coast.

Starcevich had played an impressive defensive role on Dangerfield prior to being ruled out.

“He played a great game,” Dangerfield said.
