The American superstar was seconds away from walking out when he realised his microphone wasn't working.

Extraordinary footage has revealed how narrowly Snoop Dogg avoided disaster in the moments before his pre-game AFL grand final show.

The American rapper was a controversial choice as the entertainment for footy’s showpiece event, but the feedback from his performance was largely positive in the aftermath of it.

It wouldn’t have been, though, if his microphone didn’t work.

Yep, that nearly happened.

Flanked by his brass band in the race at the city end of the MCG, Snoop was all ready to walk out and start singing his opening song The Next Episode when technical staff realised the problem.

Two men began rushing to fix the issue for the music icon, who looked less than impressed.

A pre-recorded intro from Snoop himself was playing out on the MCG’s big screens and there was only seconds remaining before his cue to walk out while the technical crew were still sorting the audio problem.

“The sound guy was sweating bullets,” one fan said.

“Thank goodness they sorted out the mic!!! That would’ve been interesting otherwise!!!” another added.

“So good seeing that even the pros can get stressed pre-performance,” a third said.

Luckily it was fixed just in the nick of time, with Snoop remaining calm enough to make it look seamless.

Before the game, the wave of controversy that followed after the AFL’s announcement of the iconic American artist was all but forgotten when he strutted into a function on the Thursday ahead of the grand final.

The 53-year-old said all the right things when sitting down for an on-stage interview.

The AFL declined to put Snoop up for an all-in media conference, like previous entertainers Katy Perry and Robbie Williams have done.

“I’m expecting the crowd to be crazy, I know what this means,” he said.

“I’ve been coming to this country for years and I understand what this game is and what it means.

“I know that it’s not just a sport, it’s a way of life.

“I know it’s not just a team or club, it’s part of your DNA, so I understand what is at stake.

“I’m here to do my part and to bring what I bring to the table.”

Snoop made an instant impact on arrival in Melbourne, having a kick on the MCG with Collingwood stars Nick and Josh Daicos.

The self-proclaimed athletic sports fan spectacularly kicked both of his kicks through for a goal, even one tricky snap from the pocket.

The famous artist, responsible for hits like ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’, ‘Beautiful, and ‘Gin and Juice’, has even had his own footy card made, posting it to his 88.6 million Instagram followers.
