Luckless Hawthorn star Will Day is set to miss the start of the season after suffering a shoulder injury at training on Thursday.

The midfielder walked off with his right arm resting in a makeshift sling while being held up by a trainer.

Day had only just returned to full training this week after missing much of the 2025 campaign with foot injuries.

But there are serious concerns about a shoulder dislocation, particularly given his history.

7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary revealed scans showed no bone damage, but he will consult a surgeon in the coming days.

Day’s 2024 season was cut short by a complicated injury on his right side that ultimately required collarbone surgery.

He was already on a modified pre-season program after suffering a season-ending right foot injury — a bone stress in his navicular — in August last year.

He had required surgery in April and missed 14 games before returning in late July.

But he managed just one more game following his return, having previously had a navicular injury in early 2024.

Several players around the league are battling injuries as pre-season training ramps up again following the Christmas break.

Melbourne captain Max Gawn is battling on with a splint on a fractured finger on his left hand.

Midfield veteran Jack Viney is still overcoming Achilles soreness while ruckman Tom Campbell will be out of action for a month after injuring his neck in an “innocuous” collision at training.

Campbell will be in a neck brace, with the club to consult a neurosurgeon to determine his rehabilitation program.

Collingwood big man Dan McStay strained his hamstring, after teammates Darcy Moore and Jeremy Howe copped calf problems.

At GWS, new recruit Clayton Oliver is sidelined for one-to-two weeks with a calf injury of his own.

Jesse Hogan (foot) and captain Toby Greene (glute) are both due to return to main training in the next two weeks.
