West Coast recruit Liam Baker responds to Eagles fans’ reaction to his trade from Richmond Tigers
West Coast recruit Liam Baker has responded to backlash from disgruntled Eagles fans who voiced their disapproval of the club parting with pick three in a deal for the uncontracted Tiger.
Baker officially joined West Coast in a contentious three-club trade on Tuesday, with the Eagles bringing in Baker, pick 12 and Carlton forward Matt Owies in exchange for pick three, with late picks also swapped.
The 26-year-old responded to the criticism on Wednesday, saying it was all part of the game and that he could appreciate Eagles supporters’ passion for the club.

“It’s part of playing AFL footy, it’s a high-pressure industry, let alone the West Coast Eagles. Their fans, their supporters and the club themselves, they want the club to perform, as do I,” Baker told Triple M.
“I’m going there for the future as well. I want the club to perform (as much as) everyone else does.”
Baker said he was “over the moon” to get the trade done on Tuesday and revealed why he chose West Coast over Fremantle.
“I always loved them growing up and I know how big they are. It was just being a part of a new group or a building group over the last few years” he said.
“They’ve obviously had a tough couple of years, being able to climb up the ladder, hopefully in the next couple of years, was something I was keen to be a part of.
“It’s going to be a big challenge but I can’t wait for it.”
Baker said he was excited to line up next to Harley Reid next season, labelling the former No.1 pick “an absolute monster”.
After lining up opposite Reid in round five last season, Baker said he was looking forward to what the 19-year-old can produce in blue and gold next year.
“It will be good lining up next to the big fella, he’s an absolute monster,” Baker told Triple M.
“Obviously the commentary around him, everyone says enough, but it will be exciting to see what he can do, especially since it was only his first year this year.
“There are also plenty of young guys around him that I like the look of as well, so with Harley and those other young blokes, hopefully, we can do something over the next couple of years.”
