Australian defensive ace Dyson Daniels’ historic NBA campaign continues, with the Atlanta guard racking up the most steals by any player for 16 years in leading the Hawks to their latest win.

Daniels produced three steals in his team’s blowout win over Charlotte on Wednesday (Australian time), lifting his season tally to 194 from 63 games.

It took Daniels past Ricky Rubio and Baron Davis for the highest single-season total of anyone since future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul’s 216 in 2008-09.

Should the man nicknamed the ‘Great Barrier Thief’ continue at his season average of just over three steals per game across Atlanta’s final 13 regular-season matches, he’s on track to finish in the top 15 for steals in a single campaign across NBA history.

Bookmakers have Daniels as the equal second-leading candidate behind Cleveland’s Evan Mobley to snare Defensive Player of the Year honours, after consensus pick Victor Wembanyama was ruled ineligible after failing to play enough games before a season-ending injury.

Daniels showed off his offensive prowess in the 134-102 rout of the Hornets, pouring in 22 points on 10-12 shooting and adding seven assists.
