Sam Kerr sent shock waves through the soccer landscape by announcing her departure from Chelsea, only for the club to reveal the ruse by announcing a new two year deal.

The Perth-born Matildas superstar sent social media into meltdown with her club releasing a video message where it looked like she was announcing her departure from Chelsea after four illustrious seasons.

“I didn’t know how to have this conversation with you guys but I think it’s best saying it,” she said.

“After four years it’s really hard to sum up how I feel.

“My time at Chelsea has been unbelievable, lots of great memories made and lifelong dreams, winning trophies.

“I guess to the fans just remember I’ll always be Chelsea and the memories and fans will stay with me forever, thank you so much.”

The message was understandably met with widespread shock with many fans blindsided by the move as tributes began to pour in.

“Thats it.. I’m done,” one X, formerly Twitter user wrote.”

“This better be a joke.. or some sort of twist!?? Please announce a new contract or something,” another wrote.

“Why is she leaving? What took her so long to tell the fans.”

In her four years at Chelsea, Kerr has scored 99 goals and collected 11 major honours including back to back Chelsea player of the year awards in 2021-22 and 2022-23 having won the Women’s Golden Boot in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

However, after leaving the public confused for more than 20 minutes, Chelsea revealed Kerr will be around to collect many more accolades, announcing the star striker has singed a new two-year contract.

“Guys what’s all this, I’m not leaving this is Chelsea,” she said.

“Did you guys really think I was gonna end on 99 goals?”

The video was met with a wave of relief and anger by Chelsea and Kerr fans who had been on a roller coaster of emotions.

“I dont even know what to say, but please don’t leave us confused like that again,” fan page Chelsea Women Daily wrote.

“It’s really exciting and a very proud moment for me. Having the opportunity to stay at a club like Chelsea means a lot to me. I’m really excited to continue to push and to try to win trophies,” Kerr said in a statement.

The clubs general manager Paul Green said the club looks forward to more success with the Perth born striker.

“We are delighted that Sam has extended her deal with the club. Sam is a leader and one of the world’s best strikers and goalscorers. She has been very important to our success, and we look forward to welcoming her back from injury next season,” he said.

Kerr is currently recovering from an ACL she suffered at a Chelsea training camp in January which will see her miss the Matildas Olympic campaign in Paris.
