Commonwealth Games: Aussie Jesse Moore isn't done yet after second bronze

Jesse Moore is hungry for more medals after becoming Australia’s first men’s individual all-around medallist at the Commonwealth Games in 16 years.

Moore shook off a shaky start to claim bronze as a near-capacity crowd at Glasgow International Arena erupted into cheers when Scotland’s Reuben Ward won gold in the final.

Ward secured the all-around title with a combined score of 79.650 points across the six apparatuses, while Canada’s Felix Dolci trailed by 0.200 points to take silver.

Dolci had knocked Moore out of second at the death, with the South Australian missing out on silver by just 0.450 points.

Moore will have a chance to add to his medal haul while competing in the pommel horse, rings and parallel bars finals.

“Of course, you’ve got to back yourself,” he said, when asked about winning more medals in Glasgow.

“I’m not sure about rings - but we’ll still have a go. But yeah, the other two for sure.

“I’m pretty stoked. It’s a dream, the all-around Commonwealth Games medal. It’s a shame it couldn’t be the gold ... it wasn’t my best day.

“On another day, I could have got gold. I think a few of the other boys could say the same. That’s sport. It’s pretty ruthless, it’s cutthroat.”

The bronze is his second medal at the Games, having guided Australia to a team bronze on the opening day of competition.

Moore is the first Australian man to medal in the individual all-around since four-time gold medallist Josh Jefferis won bronze at the 2010 Delhi Games.

It is sweet redemption for the 23-year-old, whose 2022 Birmingham campaign was cruelled by a shoulder injury.

“I’s a kind of like a full circle moment,” he said.

“That was a tough decision (pulling out of the 2022 all-around final).”

Moore had been out of action for six months following shoulder surgery, missing out on a maiden world championship appearance in 2023 before making his Olympic debut in Paris.

In 2024, Moore also matched Jefferis by becoming the first Australian man to reach an all-around Olympic final since the 2012 London Games and finished 21st overall.

Moore - the only one to have Games experience in Australia’s five-man squad in Glasgow - raised the bar, overcoming a fall on his opening pommel horse routine to score 14.100 on horizontal bar.

Australian teammate Ritam Malik, aged 19, finished seventh (77.400 points) on debut.

The men’s all-around final was paused for 10 minutes after Singaporean gymnast Jovi Loh hurt his right knee from a fall during his parallel bars routine.

Loh, 18, was stretchered from the floor, just two days after English gymnast Gabriel Langton fell headfirst from the horizontal bar during the team final.

Langton has since been cleared of serious injury.
