New South Wales Premier announces plans to introduce legislation restricting firearms access following a recent shooting incident involving a licensed gun owner.

South Australia Peter Malinauskas has revealed there will be extra security at Adelaide Oval for the third Ashes Test, beginning on Wednesday.

Malinauskas faced the media in Adelaide on Monday, the morning after the devastating terror attack at Bondi Beach.

He said South Australian Police have already been in contact with Adelaide Oval management.

“There is a major event occurring in South Australia starting on Wednesday with the Ashes Test match at Adelaide Oval,” he said on Monday.

“As is always the case with any major event, particularly those at Adelaide Oval, there are ongoing risk assessments that occur in the lead up to these events.

“Given the events that have occurred yesterday in Sydney, there will be additional protocols put in place at Adelaide Oval.

“This is done only as a precautionary measure, but it is appropriate that we are at a crescent sense of alertness just at the moment for the time being.

“I want to thank South Australian Police for their already active engagement with Adelaide Oval management in that regard.”

At least 16 people are dead and 38 more remain in hospital after two suspected shooters opened fire at an event celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach.

Hundreds of people ran from the beach while others were locked inside shops and restaurants as gunshots continued to go off.

Malinauskas went on to offer his unqualified support for Jewish community members at this time.

“And for Jewish community members, they have that context in the back of their mind when they see acts of violence of this nature, so deliberate, so premeditated, ostensibly, well organised,” he said.

“This should be of grave concern to every Australian and we have to be very clear in our projection of unqualified support for Jewish community members at this time.

“We stand with them. We pray for them and with them, where appropriate.

“And I, for one, will be doing everything I can to ensure that the South Australian Government makes crystal clear just how keen we are to support people from the Jewish community in our state over coming days ahead.”

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia and the England & Wales Cricket Board released a joint statement to pay tribute.

“Everybody at Cricket Australia and the England & Wales Cricket Board is horrified by the tragic events at Bondi Beach yesterday evening,” they said.

“All of our thoughts are with the victims, their friends and families, the Jewish community and the people of Australia at this deeply distressing time.

“Our condolences go out to all those affected.

“We stand with you.”

Flags on the Adelaide Oval scoreboard were flown at half-mast on Monday, and there is expected to be a tribute before play begins on Wednesday.
