Australian Test hero and mad AFL fan Beau Webster has revealed he will soon be changing allegiances.

The 200cm allrounder made a stunning debut in the fifth Test against India, taking a string of quality catches in the slips, picking up his maiden wicket and also making a half century in the first innings.

While Webster has reached the very top in cricket, he was also a very handy Aussie Rules player growing up.

And the proud Tasmanian is a mad fan of AFL powerhouse Collingwood.

The 31-year-old was put on the spot about his love of the Pies by Channel 7’s Trent Copeland when he revealed that he will soon be changing allegiances.

“You’re a Collingwood fan, that’s a negative. We need to get that on the table, Tasmania are going to have a team soon, what are you going to do?” Copeland asked before play on Sunday.

Webster replied: “I am a big Collingwood fan, I love my Pies. But I think when the Tassie Devils come in in a few years, I will be jumping ship.”

“I’ll still have a soft spot for the Pies no doubt and watch them closely, but can’t go past the Tassie boys when they come into the comp.”

Webster capped a stunning debut with an unbeaten 39 in the run chase on Sunday, including smashing the winning runs with a brilliant boundary.

Speaking after Day 2 on Saturday, Australia coach Andrew McDonald predicted many more Tests in the future for the allrounder.

Australia’s next matches are later this month against Sri Lanka, which first-choice allrounder Cam Green will again miss through injury.

“There’s a discussion coming up,” McDonald said when asked of Webster’s selection chances on Saturday.

“(Chief selector) George Bailey will sit down and look at that Sri Lankan squad at the end of this Test match and there’ll be a quick turnaround to the announcement.

“He’s put his best foot forward. Our angle is that he’s up to the level, we wouldn’t have picked him if he wasn’t.

“It gives us another allround option.

“To have depth in that area bodes well for us as a team and for Beau also.”

Webster, the reigning Sheffield Shield player of the year, will look to fast bowler Scott Boland as proof that there are opportunities for late bloomers who make the most of their chances.

At 32, Boland was even older than Webster when he first played Test cricket, bursting onto the scene with an unforgettable performance against England at the MCG three summers ago.

He is now Australia’s leading replacement pace option, and was the player of the match in the fifth Test.

“I’m hoping I can follow in those footsteps, that would be nice,” Wesbter said after Day 1.

“He’s been world class and if I can just contribute while I’m in the team with some catching, some wickets and hopefully some runs, it’d be a nice way for however long it lasts.”
