Australia’s Twenty20 side is sweating on the fitness of Tim David after the “one-of-one” WA product tweaked his hamstring against Perth Scorchers on Boxing Day.

David starred for Hobart against his hometown team as his 42 runs from 28 balls broke the chains for the Hurricanes and laid the foundations for his side to storm to a five-wicket victory.

But after David had helped his side overcome a slow start with some supreme hitting in the power surge, the batter pulled up lame and grabbed for his hamstring after running between the creases.

While his injury-enforced retirement did not prevent Hobart from chasing down Perth’s 8-150 in the final over, it has clouded his availability for the rest of of the Big Bash.

And with David figuring to be an important part of Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup squad in early February, any serious hamstring injury could impact his involvement.

David’s Hobart captain and Australia teammate Nathan Ellis hailed David’s impact in their successful run-chase and called him a special talent.

“The thing I love about Timmy at the moment is he’s one of one in the world and he personifies that,” he said.

“He shows dominance and he walks out and he’s an intimidating figure. At the ten-over mark, he said ‘I’m taking the surge’ and I couldn’t be happier.

Unfortunately, he didn’t see it out with what we think is hamstring injury but Timmy David is one of the better players in the world. I’m very lucky to have him.”

Ellis said David would take the injury in his stride despite it potentially being able to derail his Big Bash season and World Cup campaign.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say there’s a few of us with one eye on the World Cup as well,” he said.

“As a mate, first and foremost, I’m shattered he potentially might miss a few games for Hurricanes.

“But I’m hopeful that we’ll do all the right things and hopefully potentially get him right for the back end of the tournament and beyond with the Australian colours in the World Cup.”
