Nathan McSweeney’s debut Test innings was as short as it was eventful; the young South Australian out for 10 in Perth.

The 25-year-old was the winner of the Australia A ‘bat-off’, earning first crack at becoming retired opener David Warner’s successor.

But Indian Test superstar Jasprit Bumrah gave the debutant no quarter in a stern exam of McSweeney’s technique before capturing him on the crease for lbw on review.

Despite not taking the first ball, McSweeney was instantly thrust into the action as Usman Khawaja moved off the mark first ball.

He was beaten on the outside second ball but got off the mark with a tidy boundary down to fine leg to end the opening over.

An early outside edge fell just short of the waiting slips, and a huge lbw shout from Indian skipper Bumrah in the next over had the 25-year-old nervous.

And he should have been, as a review showed three red lights as the opener proper forward in defence, overturning the umpire’s not out decision.

India thought they were in dream land as star first-drop batter Marnus Labuschagne nicked his second ball to Virat Kohli in the slips.

However, the cricket megastar couldn’t hang on to the regulation chance, leaving Bumrah furious.
