West Australian fan favourite Mitch Marsh has been praised for a classy act ahead of the SCG Test, despite being axed in favour of all-rounder Beau Webster.

Marsh’s Test career is all but over after he was dropped by selectors for the crucial fifth and final Test of the Border Gavaskar series, in which Australia lead India 2-1.

Despite his personal circumstances, Marsh went out of his way to congratulate Webster’s family members after the Tasmanian was presented with his Baggy Green on Friday morning.

In a touching video posted to X by Triple M Cricket, Marsh is seen selflessly shaking hands and hugging each of them, as well as embracing his replacement.

One X user labelled him a “class act”, while another said: “If there’s a better bloke in world cricket, you’d be hard pressed to find them. The ultimate team man!”

The 33-year-old was averaging just 10.7 with the bat and bowled sparingly across the four previous Tests.

With a back concern for pace spearhead Mitchell Starc, it left selectors with no choice but to hand Webster a debut.

On Thursday, Australian captain Pat Cummins said Marsh understood the decision and said he was excited to see Webster debut.

“Really excited for Beau,” Cummins said.

“The first thing he (Marsh) said was ‘I can’t wait to see Beau go out there and give it a crack’.”

Webster was presented the 469th baggy green cap by Mark Waugh.
