Teenage sensation Sam Konstas has exchanged heated words with Indian spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in a spicy end to day one of the SCG Test.

And it was Bumrah who had the last laugh, giving the second-gamer a send-off after dismissing veteran opener Usman Khawaja with his last delivery.

As stumps neared, Khawaja was not ready as Bumrah got to the top of his mark, prompting the fast bowler to throw his arms out in frustration, accusing him of wasting time.

Konstas, at the non-striker’s end, then got involved and a verbal confrontation escalated between him and the Indian captain.

Both umpires stepped in between the pair to diffuse the situation as emotions bubbled.

As play resumed, a fired-up Bumrah steamed into Khawaja, who nicked the ball to KL Rahul at second slip.

Bumrah immediately turned to stare down Konstas as the Indians celebrated wildly, charging past the 19-year-old as he walked back to the pavilion alongside Khawaja.

The confrontation and the wicket that followed was the exclamation point on a chaotic opening day at the SCG, with India bowled out for 185 and Australia 1-9 at stumps.

It came after Konstas flicked Bumrah over mid-wicket to the boundary with the first ball he faced.

“The first ball when he ran down the wicket and clipped him over mid wicket there was no surprise anymore. It was just like, ‘Here we go, he’s away’,” Australian debutant Beau Webster said.

“He is a very confident young man. That’s what they do these days, they get after it and put themselves out there.

“He’s got all the skills and talent to back it up, so hopefully he has a really good day tomorrow and puts some good runs on the board and puts us in a decent position.”

India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant also played down the situation.

“I feel they had a little chit chat, they wanted to waste some time. I think that’s the reason he had a conversation with Jasi (Bumrah),” Rashibh said.

“He said something, I didn’t hear it, but I feel that’s the only thing which he wanted to do was just waste some time so we don’t bowl one more over.”

The young opener, who made a swashbuckling 60 on debut in the Boxing Day Test, also had a run-in with Virat Kohli during his opening knock in Melbourne.

Kohli was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for the shoulder barge, while the Bumrah-Konstas exchange could also come under the spotlight.
