Footage soon emerged showing the superstars shaking hands while sharing a brief word, with Kohli appearing to ask ‘last?’ to Smith.

Smith responds and Kohli closes his eyes, dips his head and hugs his opponent.

Kohli, seven months older than Smith and still masterminding victories with the bat, appears set to play on to the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

Smith said Test cricket remains a priority in the twilight of his career but it remains to be seen whether one or both of the pair will be around for the next Border-Gavaskar series two years from now.

The Aussie has long said he would continue weighing his career in all formats on a series-by-series basis.

A two-time World Cup winner, Smith was celebrated around the cricket world following his retirement announcement.

“Steve, I still remember the young lad who walked into the Pune Warriors camp back in 2012 — hungry to learn, eager to prove himself,” Yuvraj Singh said.

“Watching you grow from strength to strength, shaping yourself into one of the greats of the game, has been nothing short of incredible.

“From those early days to becoming a two-time World Cup winner, your journey has been one of dedication and perseverance.

“Your impact on the game goes beyond numbers — your resilience, your hunger, and your ability to rise in the biggest moments have made you a true champion.

“As you step away from ODIs, know that you’ve left behind a legacy that will inspire generations. Wishing you the very best for the road ahead, mate!”

Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon said: “Top-notch player and teammate. Plenty more to come in Test and T20.”

Usman Khawaja and David Warner shared old photos of themselves with Smith.

“Well done Smudge. The achievements are obvious,” Khawaja wrote.

“But the mems will last a lifetime. Congrats on a terrific ODI career.”

Warner said: “Congrats mate on an unbelievable one day career. Blues to Australia, loved being alongside you.”

“You’ve served the country unbelievably well and hopefully this decision prolongs you to keep going in the Test arena. Best player I’ve played alongside in my career. #Goat #legend,” he added.
