The cricketing world has been given a glimpse into Australia’s future as West Australian young gun Cooper Connolly broke a decade-old Indian Premier League record on Thursday (AWST).

The 22-year-old became the youngest overseas player ever to register triple figures in the prestigious IPL, cracking an unbeaten 107 from 59 balls batting first drop for Punjab Kings.

However, his first professional century, which came with seven boundaries and eight maximums, was not enough for the explosive left-hander to be named man-of-the-match as his side fell short of Sunrisers Hyderabad, pipped by Aussie Test captain Pat Cummins.

Connolly reached his milestone in the final over of the chase that fell 33 runs short, a series of dropped catches in the first innings helping Sunrisers to an insurmountable 4-235.

The Perth Scorchers champion is enjoying a breakout season in India after being picked up in the auction at the behest of the King’s Australian coach, Ricky Ponting.

Connolly sits narrowly outside the top 10 run scorers for the tournament with 377 at 53.85 with a strike rate of 171.36.

The West Australian surpassed South African star Quinton de Kock’s record as the youngest overseas player to score an IPL hundred, which he set at 23 with a century for Delhi a decade ago.

Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer praised Connolly post-match.

“Cooper’s phenomenal,” he said.

“His mindset is top-notch, the character he brings to the field, all players can learn from him. I feel he’s got a knack for scoring big runs in pressure situations.”

Cummins was the star of the show for Hyderabad, taking 2-34 with ball in hand as well as two impressive catches on a night where drops became contagious.

Cummins said it had been “good to see the Aussies doing well” as he claimed the man-of-the-match award after the contest.

“Good to see the Aussies doing well. He’s been a star this season with the bat for them. Not bowling at the moment, but still showing his worth as a batter. So good time for Aus,” he said.

The Sunrisers’ victory saw them knock the Kings off the top of the table as Punjab slipped to three-straight defeats as they hunt a maiden crown.
