They were the post-game scenes that were almost as dramatic as the match itself.

England snared a 3-2 victory in a game being hailed as one of the greatest in World Cup history, outlasting Mexico 3-2 despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.

It helped the perennial underachievers book a quarter final berth, and it was clear in the immediate aftermath just how much it meant to the players.

England captain Harry Kane gave an interview that quickly went viral as his voice went high-pitched and was almost incomprehensible at times, underlining how vocal he had been during the match in front of a raucous Mexico home crowd at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

His first question from the BBC interviewer was about teammate Jordan Henderson, who tumbled awkwardly while leaping over an advertising wall and had to be assisted by medical staff.

“Jordan fell over there... I think he’s OK. Something to do with his arm,” Kane squeaked out.

Initial reports suggested Henderson - who was an unused substitute against Mexico - injured his wrist in the fall.

Kane said he was thrilled that his team had stood tall in daunting conditions at altitude and against a wave of home-nation support to keep their tournament alive.

“It was a crazy game,” he said.

“I can’t really talk... but all the occasion, the team, everything against us... we found a way.”
