Matildas great Lydia Williams announces impending birth of first child a year on from retirement

Just over a year on from her emotional retirement, Matildas champion Lydia Williams has revealed an exciting new chapter.

Williams, who went from humble beginnings in Kalgoorlie to represent Australia more than 100 times, took to Instagram to announce the upcoming birth of her first child with the help of her corgi Caviar.

“Incoming! Caviar has some news. Human sibling coming soon,” she posted along with the song Baby Mama Dance.

The Matildas team and former teammates were quick to congratulate Williams on the news.

“So excited for both of youuuuu,” Courtney Nevin wrote.

“Soooo happy for you both!!!” current Matildas goalkeeper Teagan Micah added.

Chloe Berryhill and Clare Polkinghorne were also amongst the well-wishers.

Six-time Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Cole was also excited by the news.

“Omgggg YES!!! Congrats and excellent song choice,” she posted.

The 37-year-old and proud Noongar woman bid an emotional farewell to the Matildas in June last year, receiving a standing ovation. and was presented with a Booka by Evonne Goolagong Cawley, the cloak, traditionally worn by Noongar peoples.

Having missed her last A-League Women with a wrist injury, her baby news could also see the end of her professional career as she was set to weigh up her future in the off-season.
