With Isack Hadjar already crashing on the formation lap, delaying the start by 15 minutes, Doohan was caught out on the straight when a load of wheelspin saw him spin out on lap one.
He was unharmed in the incident but will do little to alleviate the pressure on his seat.
To add to the drama last year’s winner Carlos Sainz then spun out on the final turn in a similar incident to Doohan meaning three cars crashed out before the first lap had been completed.
Oscar Piastri thankfully avoided the carnage but did lose a place off the line with defending world champion Max Verstappen jumping him at the start.
Piastri is aiming to become the first Australian to ever stand on the podium at Albert Park.
