Detectives launched an investigation in November last year after reports of a large amount of cryptocurrency being stolen.

Following months of inquiries, Merrin was arrested on Tuesday morning during a search warrant at a home in Barrack Point, in Shellharbour, south of Wollongong.

Several electronic devices were also seized for forensic examination.

Merrin has been charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on December 3.

Merrin played more than 150 games for the Dragons, as well as another 100 for Penrith and Leeds in the English Super League.

He was a key member of the Dragons’ 2010 premiership-winning team and also played 13 times for New South Wales.

Merrin retired midway through the 2021 season.
