Nicho Hynes has pushed his case to run out for NSW in State of Origin I after getting through a light warm-up at Blues training.

Battling to overcome a calf injury, Hynes completed brief drills with players before separating and training with second-rower Liam Martin.

The pair completed a number of shuttle runs and passes under the watchful eye of staff, with Hynes able to step at slow pace.

Watching media were then kicked out of the rest of Thursday’s session in the Blue Mountains, but the halfback’s involvement was already greater than it was on Wednesday.

Hynes failed to complete Cronulla’s loss to Penrith on Saturday night, but NSW are confident he will be fit to face Queensland next Wednesday night at Accor Stadium.

A call is likely to be made in coming days, with back-up half Luke Keary expected to be released back to the Sydney Roosters for a game on Sunday.

Blues coach Michael Maguire made one call on Thursday, appointing Isaah Yeo as the new vice-captain under Jake Trbojevic.

He will take charge of the side while on the field when Trbojevic is interchanged off.

“After watching Yeoy get around camp, he’s a born leader,” Maguire said.

“It’s nice to see that I’ve got two really strong characters in both the boys.

“Obviously there’ll be an interchange between those guys at some stage on the field, so I’ve got two really strong characters and leaders on the field quality person.”
