NRL great Brad Fittler has been slammed after an interview with Australian Olympic gold medallists Jess and Noemie Fox went horribly wrong.

The live interview has been called a “trainwreck” and “inappropriate”, and certainly took an awkward turn when Fittler asked the sisters for a kiss.

An embarrassed Jess quickly looked away and Noemie wondered if they were on air.

“I’m just waiting for kiss cam to come on … for me,” Fittler said on the live NRL coverage on Nine.

“It’s not happening.”

Fittler also seemed to ask a suggestive question after that.

“Do you like it?” he said to Noemie, giggling.

Noemie: said: “Huh?”

Fittler continued: “Do you like it?” He paused and added: “The environment here? Do you like the footy?”

It was then Noemie asked if they were live.

“Yes, we’re on,” Fittler said.

Noemie: “Oh, we’re live? Yeah, I love the footy. Honestly, this is an amazing reception that we’ve received.”

Fans could not believe what they were seeing.

“Slow motion train wreck of an attempted interview… if it could be called that,” one fan said.

Another called “creepy”.

Rugby Leaugue News social media account said: “I don’t think he should lose his job for this. However It was an inappropriate comment and made the women feel uncomfortable. They were there for sporting achievements, not to be hit on.”

And another: “I mean two females invited onto NRL broadcast to celebrate their achievement of gold Olympic medals and they cop that on live national TV. Not the best look for the game.

“Just a dumb thing to say, especially when the girls are there because of such a big achievement and they gotta cop old married Fitler cracking on to them.”

Fittler was supported, however, with some fans thinking the backlash was over the top.

“It’s an awkward moment to say the most. It’s a lame attempt at humour. Cringe and move on ... (for those) calling him a misogynist and for him to lose his job should be embarrassed,” one fan said.

A Nine spokesperson said Fittler’s comments were referring to “a Kiss cam” that was in the stadium, but not part of the TV coverage.

“Brad’s comments related to that activity on the ground. Brad’s comments were not directed to the Fox sisters, no malice was intended and no offence was taken,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“Freddy works tirelessly in the community space to improve the treatment of all Individuals and he remains a valued member of staff at Nine.”
