A red drink in a glass bottle sits next to the substance.

There is no suggestion from 7NEWS.com.au that the substance is an illicit drug.

An anonymous woman with blonde hair also appears in the photo.

The Rabbitohs confirmed on Monday afternoon that the photo was taken on the weekend just past.

“The South Sydney Rabbitohs have been made aware of a photograph circulating through social media of Latrell Mitchell following a personal appearance in Dubbo on the weekend,” the club said.

“The club has informed the NRL Integrity Unit about the photograph.

“The Rabbitohs will be making no further comment at this stage.”

Mitchell was in Dubbo over the weekend for coaching clinics and is believed to have stayed the night.

The club vehemently defended its decision to allow him to go the NSW country town for the weekend rather than attend its Round 22 clash with Cronulla.

The 27-year-old has not played since injuring his foot in Round 18 against Parramatta.

The Rabbitohs do not expect him to return at all this season.

He has played just 11 games this year.
